| Spring begins to resolve into summer, the threat of a frosty morning recedes further into the realm of the extremely improbable, and carpets of weeds quickly colonize our freshly turned fields. When people hear the word “harvest”, they think of pumpkins, autumn leaves, and chilly evenings, but our harvest season begins with the first asparagus poking through the cold April soil, and the roster of vegetables and fruits quickly expands from there. As we near the end of May, the variety of produce reaches a critical mass, and the compulsion to open the farmstand becomes irresistible, and we plan to open for limited hours starting this coming weekend (Saturday the 30th and Sunday the 31st) with a modest but growing selection of produce, and a large variety of garden plants including lots of tomatoes and peppers. We’re still harvesting asparagus for a little while yet but numbers are dwindling, and are also well into rhubarb season. We have begun to pick our first plantings of arugula, kale, radishes, cilantro, dill, spinach, braising greens, with lettuce, kohlrabi, endive, escarole, chard and parsley soon to come. With luck, the first ripening strawberries will coincide with our opening, but likely they will start slowly and won’t be abundant until at least the following weekend. We’re welcoming back many returning crew members and some new faces right now, and hope to see your smiling faces walking into the farmstand or visiting us at a farmers market soon! Opening Weekend hours at the Farmstand: 11am-3pm Saturday May 30th 11am-3pm Sunday May 31st: Farmstand Closed on Monday June 1st (But as usual we will be at the Cambridge Central Square farmers market) Regular Farmstand hours start on Tuesday June 2nd: Tuesdays-Saturdays 11am-6pm and Sundays 11am-5pm And remember we attend three farmers markets each week: -Mondays at Central Square in Cambridge: 12pm-6pm -Thursdays in Belmont Center: 2pm-6:30pm (Starting June 4th) -Saturdays in Union Square Somerville: 9am-1pm We hope to see you soon for another season! -Brian, Liza and the Hutchins Farm Crew |
