Hutchins Farm is one of the oldest and largest certified organic vegetable and fruit operations in Massachusetts. Organic since 1973, Hutchins grows over 40 acres of vegetables, about an acre of small fruit, and 8 acres of apples. We sell our produce directly to consumers at our farm stand in Concord, MA, and at three weekly farmers’ markets, with a small amount of sales to local restaurants.

FIELD CREW –Accepting applications for the 2022 season starting in February of 2022

Hutchins Farm is seeking motivated individuals with an interest in farming, gardening, food, or just working outside, to work in our production fields this season.  Some help will be needed as early as April, but most hands will be needed in May or early June through October—individuals who can stay for three or more months will be given preference.
The work will vary, but will include: planting, weeding, harvesting, washing, and packing a wide variety of vegetables and small fruit.  Workers may also be involved in greenhouse work, grounds maintenance, sales in our Farm Stand or at Farmers’ Markets, irrigation, or other aspects of the operation based on the farm’s needs and the worker’s inclination.

Full time workers will be expected to work 5 days per week, and must work at least one weekend day. Part time workers must be able to do 3 days, and must work at least one weekend day.  The workday starts at 7am and usually goes until 4 or 5pm, with an unpaid hour for lunch. Hourly pay begins at $14.25/hour with a $0.50 per-hour-worked year-end bonus contingent on completion of a time commitment agreement, plus free vegetables from the farm. There is potential for increases for longer term workers based on their performance and the overall performance of the farm. Applicants should be able to lift 50+ lbs repeatedly. FARM STAND CREWAccepting applications for the 2022 season starting in February of 2022

Hutchins Farm is seeking motivated, outgoing individuals to work in our busy Farm Stand and Farmers’ Market stalls.  Work involves preparing produce for sale, building displays, creating signage, ringing up customers and keeping our sales area clean and welcoming.  Friendly, helpful demeanor is a must; interest in local, organic food and retail experience are desirable.

Applicants should be able to lift 50+ lbs.  Our Farm Stand is open from the beginning of June through the end of October. Applicants should be willing to commit to working at least one weekend day, preferably both. Full-time preferred, part-time possible–exact hours will depend on specific job description.  Farm stand workdays begin at 9am or 10am depending on the shift and end around 3:30pm or 6:30pm depending on the shift. Farmers’ Market hours vary by the day. Pay based on experience and begins at $14.25/hour with a $0.50 per-hour-worked year-end bonus contingent on completion of a time commitment agreement, plus free vegetables from the farm. FARMERS’ MARKET SUPERVISOR– Now accepting applications for the 2022 season.

Hutchins Farm is seeking a motivated, outgoing individual to help manage our 3 Farmers’ Market stalls. The Farmers’ Market Supervisor (FMS) will work under the direction of the Marketing and Business Manager to ensure that our farmers’ market stalls run smoothly and are welcoming to customers. The FMS will lead a crew member at each market in all tasks related to the market, ensuring the market is run efficiently and correctly, while maintaining a positive and supportive work environment.

The Farmers’ Market Supervisor will be responsible for:

  • Packing and driving the market van safely
  • Setting up our farmers’ market stalls correctly at each different market location
  • Building displays
  • Creating signage
  • Supervising an assistant crew member
  • Ringing up customers’ purchases accurately and efficiently, including using cash, credit card and ebt systems
  • Keeping the sales area clean and welcoming
  • Keeping the market van clean and organized
  • Ensuring that tasks are completed correctly, efficiently, and safely with attention to Hutchins’ standards, individual market procedures, and current Covid-19 guidlines.
  • Communicating to customers the latest news and updates about produce availability, adverse growing conditions, or other relevant information.
  • Communicating to the Marketing and Business Manager any important information about the day’s market
  • Maintaining a safe work environment, including reinforcing Hutchins Farm’s policies as laid out in the employee handbook.

Schedule:

  • The farmers’ market season runs from the end of May through the end of October, applicants must be able to work the full season.
  • Hours are usually as follows: Mondays 9:00am – 7:30pm, Thursdays 11:45am – 7:30pm, Saturdays 6:00am – 2:45pm.
  • If full-time (5 days) employment if preferred, two additional days a week can be added by working on the field crew or on the farmstand crew.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in customer service and excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent communications and time management skills
  • Ability to quickly pick up new concepts and techniques, and then teach them to others
  • Valid driver’s license and an excellent driving record
  • Ability to lift 50lbs repeatedly
  • Friendly, helpful demeanor
  • An interest in local and organic food
  • Basic mental math skills
  • Ability to work well in a team atmosphere
  • Must be able and feel comfortable driving a 18 foot van in and out of Cambridge, including parking in difficult conditions.

Compensation starts at $15.50/hr, with a $0.50 per-hour-worked year-end bonus contingent on completion of time agreement, plus free vegetables from the farm. Housing is not available.
