Employment Opportunities
Hutchins Farm is one of the oldest and largest certified organic vegetable, fruit, and cut flower operations in Massachusetts. Organic since 1973, Hutchins grows over 40 acres of vegetables, about an acre of small fruit, half an acre of cut flowers, and 4 acres of apples. We sell our produce directly to consumers at our farm stand in Concord, MA, and at three weekly farmers’ markets, with a small amount of sales to local restaurants.
PERENNIAL FRUIT MANAGER – Now accepting applications for the 2025 season.
Hutchins Farm is seeking a new perennial fruit manager to help manage our 4 acres of certified
organic apples and one acre of certified organic blueberries.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have an interest in organic perennial fruit and vegetable production. The
position will require a considerable amount of independent work and decision-making, so
candidates must be reliable, responsible and communicate well. Experience working with
tractors and mechanical farm equipment is required. Training on how to operate our specific
equipment, which includes a John Deere 5400N orchard tractor, blast sprayer, and mowers, and
other tractor-drawn implements, and how to safely use a chainsaw for pruning and tree removal
will be given, but comfort in using this kind of equipment is required. Experience in apple or
other fruit production is desirable, but is not required.
Responsibilities will include:
Primary focus: Apples and Blueberries: includes – pruning during the winter,
application of organic spray materials during the spring and early summer, mowing in the
summer and fall, and harvest of the crop. The Manager will receive assistance for the more
labor-intensive tasks but will be responsible for the management of these jobs.
Secondary focus: Vegetable Crop Production: includes involvement in other parts of
vegetable crop production, in particular machinery/tractor operations, (ie seeding, mowing,
cultivating) occasionally joining the field crew on some jobs, or other grounds maintenance jobs
as the farm needs.
Compensation:
The Perennial Fruit Manager position is year-round salaried position. Salary will be commensurate with experience. During the peak harvest season (June-October) weekend work is required. Health insurance is provided on our farm plan, with the full monthly premium paid by the farm. A two-bedroom unfurnished apartment in a duplex adjacent to the farm is available at a subsidized cost. All employees at Hutchins Farm are welcome to harvest vegetables and fruit for themselves throughout the season. We are hoping to find a candidate who can commit to staying a minimum of two years (with the hopes of this becoming a longer-term role)
