April 2026 Newsletter: Early Spring is Here!

Snowdrifts have been replaced by drifts of snowdrops, a few bold frogs test their luck on a warm March evening, robins and squirrels bob cheerfully in the greening grass—the spring transition is well underway.

At Hutchins, our greenhouses are quickly filling with eager young plants (and workers), waiting for their time to stretch their roots in the soil and unfurl their leaves in the warmth of a not-too-distant summer’s morning.

Our fields, gridlocked with honking geese, are drying out on warm spring afternoons, tempting limited tractor forays along the drier edges. Beds of garlic and strawberries, having dreamed winterlong under blankets of straw, awaken to lengthening days and building warmth.

Bagged soil and compost is now available for sale, self-serve on the porch, with garden plants soon to come. Produce is still a few weeks away, but each day brings us closer to the slowly building exuberance of the warm season, with all its variety and delights. As always please see our “what’s at the stand” tab on our website for the most up-to-date information.

Our 2026 team is almost in place, with lots of familiar faces, and lots of new faces—we’re welcoming back long-timers Ted Thompson, Matt Marolda, Abby Cramer, also Huey Harn-Chen and Liz Norton (both on temporary hiatus, each expecting their first child). Also returning are harvest managers Lexie Molloy and Lulu Feeney, farmstand manager Sofia Koso, and perennial fruit manager Matt McGovern And you will still see plenty of familiar faces on the field crew, farmstand crew, and market crew (we have secured both Sarah Norton and John Kassabian for another season!) and the smallest of new faces – Lettie (Liza and Tom’s new baby) – will be making guest appearances all season.

The farmstand will open its doors later this spring, but the farm is already starting to buzz with activity! Self-serve on the honor system will be growing soon, so please keep checking our website and social media for updates. Please remember it’s exact change or check only until the farmstand opens closer to June. For those of you dreaming and scheming up your garden, the Hutchins Plant Catalog is online – please see our “produce information” tab for the downloadable PDFs.

Coming up at the end of the month is the Concord Agriculture Committee’s Spring Forum event: hear American Historian, Professor Robert A. Gross, talk about the Gardening Revolution in Concord- an exploration of land, literature, and liberty, including accounts of the Minutemen and transcendentalists. Free and open to the public on Thursday April 30th from 6pm-7:30pm at the Concord Library (Main Branch) in the Goodwin Forum. Please join us for this special evening celebrating Concord’s rich agricultural history!

We hope to welcome both long-time and new customers as the season progresses, from the ranks of garden plants, the first berries, to the peppers, tomatoes and corn yet to come. Welcome back spring!
